CC 2007 Observations
Posted: 24 Apr 07 12:24 PM

My Dallas Code Camp 2007 experience was both insightful and beneficial. I have a few observations and suggestions for the next event.

This is a “Code Camp. Please spend less of the limited time on background discussion and more on code. Ex. One presenter spent 30+ min. “selling” their technology.

Presenters should not snipe at other products, O/S, etc. This is more of a professional issue.

Have a common repository, for the slides, code, etc., or provide links to the slides on the Dallas Code Camp web site. Suggestions, use the DotNetNuke document library.

Is there any way to have more than one CC in a year? I would be iterested in the event even if there were not valuable prizes. If we can not not have a physical camp, could we have video talk such as appear on the learning area of asp.net?

One additional point, at this “ Code Camp” I did not see one of the presenters produce a single line of code! This raises a question, do they even know how to code?

Thank you for your feedback.

You should be able to see a 'Downloads' menu on the menu bar. Speaker files will be uploaded there in the next few days.

What topics would you like to see presented in the future?

Have you heard the saying, those that can't do, teach! ;) Code ... whats that?

In all seriousness though, you bring up very valuable points. There are reasons that some of us have gone to non code / chalk talk formats. The true reason is probably laziness on our part, but with the abounding problems of ensuring virtual machines work, display glitches, etc, it can be much easier to not show code.

There is also the factor of time. I know I'm so busy it's hard to put time together for a code presentation. And for some of us, we use work time to do it. But in order to do that, usually the company owners want to see some payback for that time. That "could" explain the selling of the technology.

I'm not trying to list excuses, but just letting you know the reason for the trend. And I am in full agreement, we probably do need to get back to the roots of what we are doing and why. One thing I always like to do though is to challenge you to help us. Every user group is looking for more and more presenters. If you'd like to see more of something, help us by volunteering. Every ounce of effort you invest, will definately be returned in some way. The contacts and friends we have all made are so much worth every minute I've invested.

There is nothing wrong with a non-code talk about the theory of "x".  However, there is an issue of spending 30 min. "selling" the idea or product.  You need to know your audience!

I guess the presenter should know that if someone shows up, they are interested in the topic.  Stick to the facts and let me decide if I want to use the tool!

I think you are absolutely right dm_fw. I will make sure speakers understand this next time. However, for future events, keep in mind that Code Camps are not the only place where this could happen. It can only be benficial if the audience tells the speaker right there, during the session, that they are perceiving the session as a product demonstration, and that such thing is not what was expected. By attending a session, you get the opportunity to not let the speaker waste your time, or at least let him or her know that you think your time is being wasted. By doing so, the speakers gets the choice to listen and take a corrective action, therefore improving both, the session experience for the attendees and the ratings he/she gets on the evaluation forms ;-)
